Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get physical therapy without a prescription or referral from a doctor?

Yes! Patients may directly access physical therapists without a physician referral. At a certain point in your care plan it may be appropriate to get a referral from a doctor. Dr. Abby Blackburn, D.C. is available in-house for PT referrals. You can see more details here and learn more about legislation here.

What should I expect during my first appointment?

All new patients will begin their plan of care with a comprehensive initial evaluation which, along with applicable treatment, will last approximately one hour. We will review medical history, diagnostic tests, and any causative factors or events that contributed to your current condition. Your evaluation may include an assessment of strength, range of motion, pain, posture and motor control, as well as an assessment of movement and any functional limitations that may be present due to the primary complaint.

We will establish therapy goals and a treatment plan which will include a personalized home exercise program.

What should I expect from dry needling?

For myofascial trigger points, the goal of dry needling is usually to elicit a twitch response. This twitch may feel like an involuntary spasm and is usually followed by relief of symptoms/pain and improvement of muscle tightness. There may be transient muscle soreness which may last 24-48 hours. In general, the relief of symptoms will supersede this temporary soreness.

Most patients feel improvements after one treatment! Symptoms will continue to improve with subsequent treatments, typically 2-4 for lasting effect though it varies on patient diagnosis.

What should I wear to my appointments?

Please wear comfortable, loose athletic clothing that allows your therapist access to the body part you are being seen for.
